FISH AND CHIPS – A LONG-LASTING TRADITION

FISH AND CHIPS – A LONG-LASTING TRADITION

National Fish and Chips Day

All set for Fish and Chips day?

We heard that the first fish and chips shop was opened by the Malin family in East London in 1860. Wrapped in newspaper until the 1980s, today Fish and Chips can be found in small takeaway shops as well as in classy restaurants.

Interesting facts: The oldest Fish & Chip Shop in the World is in Yeadon near Leeds and it has been opened since 1865.

NOT JUST FISH AND CHIPS

So why celebrate this British all-time favourite classic? More than 250 million fish and chip meals are sold each year in the UK. Even during WWII this popular dish wasn’t rationed; nearly every meal for supper was fish and chips. Not convinced yet? Fish and Chips also appear in literature as Charles Dickens cites it in "A Tale Of Two Cities".

Interesting facts: £1.2 billion is spent on fish and chips in the UK every year

WHERE TO EAT FISH AND CHIPS THIS WEEKEND?

We heard that the best fish and chips shop is currently based in Plymouth, at `Kingfisher Fish & Chips`, also winner of the National Fish & Chip Awards 2017.

This might be a bit far for a busy Londoner so here’s a few closer suggestions.

For West End lovers, Bonnie Gull in Fitzrovia is an excellent pick with its refined menu. Treat yourself to top quality oysters and cocktails before tucking into traditionally battered North Sea haddock. East Londoners will be queueing in front of Poppies, a retro style shop with responsibly-sourced ingredients and `legendary chips`. Fish Lounge in Brixton is a must try if you`re strolling around South London this weekend. Last but not least Hook Camden Town in North London is offering quirky battered fish variations accompanied by seaweed salted chips.

Not the biggest fried food fan? Then go for an oven-baked version with spicy-parmesan coating. Alternatively, follow Jamie Oliver’s suggestion and enhance flavor by battering freshly-bought fish in your favourite beer. Share your creations with us and happy fish&chips weekend!
