Space of the month – Guildhall London, Amphitheatre

Mar 5, 2020

Guildhall London is no stranger to amazing event spaces, among their ten individually intriguing spaces is the Amphitheatre - a hidden historic gem underneath the Art Gallery. Independently the Art Gallery is a stunning room particularly rich in Victorian art, together the two spaces can be booked as the ideal multi-functional venue.

Historians knew there was an Amphitheatre somewhere in London, but it wasn’t until the Art Gallery was refurbished in 1986, that that its location was discovered, and it was identified as one of the biggest Amphitheatre’s in Britain. It quickly made headline news and the remains were immediately protected by the government.

Built in AD70, it was originally made in wood and as London grew wealthier it was rebuilt in stone. The remains we see today are of the Eastern entrance of the arena (once holding around 10,000 people), one room that would’ve been used to hold animals and another that they are almost certain was for gladiators.

Truly absorb the atmosphere of the Amphitheatre as you and your guests sit over the glass flooring, showcasing the original Roman drainage system - implemented to drain water away from the Amphitheatre floor. The remains are located either side of the room, with no barriers or ropes to take away the beauty from the history. As an open plan space, there is plenty of room for imagination and décor to dress your event as you wish. The venue holds 80 people for dinner and 100 people reception style.
